Joe Silvey, the first naturalized Luso-Canadian, from Pico Island in the Azores. Naturalized in 1867. He married a First Nations spouse, in British Columbia, built a house in Stanley Park, ran a saloon in Gastown, and in 1868 tried to lease 20 acres at Brockton Point. This was before the Great Vancouver Fire of 1886. See Jean Barman, The Remarkable Adventures of Portuguese Joe Silvey (Harbour Publishing, 2004). Other Portuguese, all too often unfairly forgotten, also took part in the actual building of the province of British Columbia -- and of Canada as such. From sea to shining sea. Clicking on the static image of Joe Silvey will take you to a 3-D Google sphere in Vancouver, Gastown quarter, near the iconic Steam Clock. The exact location of Joe Silvey's pre-1868 (and thus of course pre-1886 Great Fire) saloon and tap-room remains poorly known. Yes, the blue text in this vignette is links to further 3D spheres (as in many of our vignettes), for you to explore if you so desire.

Clicking on the static image will load in your browser window a Google Maps 3D sphere that allows you to take a digital walkthrough in the vicinity. Hovering your cursor over the 3D -surround scene allows you, as usual, to grab-and-rotate the scene in all directions. Flattened 'oval and arrow' pointers, when hovering, tell you where you may go further, to other available adjacent 3D spheres. The map in the lower left hand corner, when enlarged and filling the lower portion of the screen, will show you where exactly you are in town, and blue lines in the streets indicate where other 3D spheres or linked street scenes may be accessed.
