Kensington Market (Toronto) 1967. After the Canada-Portugal labour migration agreement of 1953, many Portuguese settled and established various modest businesses in the initially heavily Jewish Market area. Storefronts at the entrance to private houses remained a trademark tradition. Waves of migration and social mobility / dreams / volatility marked the Kensington area. Portuguese bakeries, grocery stores and bookstores flourished, as did a Portuguese-Canadian newspaper. The First Portuguese Canadian Club (FPCC) was founded here in 1956. In 1966 (a year before this photo was taken, even as Portuguese construction workers walked the perilouos high steel beams of the Toronto Dominion Centre [under construction]), the FPCC created a basic Credit Union to serve Portuguese immigrants. City of Toronto Archives, Fonds 124, File 7, Item 4. Clicking on the static image will take you to a 3D walkable location of the First Portuguese Evangelical Church -- a piece of documented and living history. The stark contrast between this utterly humble self-effacing church structure and the glitter-world steel-and-glass highrise across the street is priceless. Immigrants helped builf those steel-and-glass towers. Please visit, and walk the digital streets of the bohemian Kensington area. For records of other 2023 celebrations of the arrival of Portuguese immigrants in Canada in May 1953 at
the Pier 21 (liner terminal and immigration area from 1928 to 1971), in Halifax, see e.g. https://70anoscanada.com

Branca Amélia Correia Proença Gomes, and steam liner immigrant arrival at Pier 21, Halifax. Clicking on the static image will load in your browser window a Google Maps 3D sphere that allows you to take a digital walkthrough in the vicinity. Hovering your cursor over the 3D -surround scene allows you, as usual, to grab-and-rotate the scene in all directions. Flattened 'oval and arrow' pointers, when hovering, tell you where you may go further, to other available adjacent 3D spheres. The map in the lower left hand corner, when enlarged and filling the lower portion of the screen, will show you where exactly you are, and blue lines in the streets indicate where other 3D spheres or linked street scenes may be accessed.
