The province of Minas Gerais, as Portuguese Crown territory, saw its fortunes soar with the discovery of abundant sources of gold. The resulting commercialization fostered the rise of urban centers, swelling from a rapid influx of people. An affluent middle class rubbed shoulders here with destitute "down-and-outs of the gold rush." The present volume explores various aspects of the broad social, economic and political dynamics of Minas Gerais in the eighteenth century and in the first half of the nineteenth. The eighteenth century witnessed a complex process of land settlement, the structuring of a judicial apparatus in 1745-1748, the establishment of the Bishopric of Mariana, the gold rush, and the subsequent "decline." Starting in the second half of the eighteenth century, the area reoriented toward a subsistence economy and then to an increasingly commercialized production of foodstuffs, which made Minas Gerais a key agropastoral supplier for Rio de Janeiro and for the Court. The book's chronological frame reflects the relevant socio-economic trends -- the Empire's social and economic fabric did not alter significantly even after Brazil's Independence. It was only the laws that curbed the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the Land Laws of 1850 that initiated change. Nonetheless, in the dynamically evolving society of Minas Gerais, production and commerce were the two key engines of "locus and orbis networking" -- of connections between the "local" and the "global." This network faclitated "large-scale flows of the most varied objects, knowledge, techniques, practices, beliefs, representations and discourses ..." The studies presented here focus precisely on such practices, techniques, knowledge, beliefs, representations and discourses.
